Nightmare

deepest, darkest night
the only sight, blackness,
creeps and craws and claws to cover all light

they hide in it and thrive in it,
deepest hidden fears coming alive,
silently stalking the night

blankets offer little cover,
from the beasties in the night,
poking and prodding to revel in fear

gnashing teeth,
tearing claws,
monstrous forms, living in dark

deep piercing eyes,
an uncountable number,
stare from all corners to ruin security

playfully hiding from view,
to attack from behind,
then laughing, dissipate back into night whence they came

causing fear and despair
they're only wish,
ravaging hope and all things good

poisoning life
with everything evil,
starting a war, ending a truce

leaving fear and uncertainty,
in they're wake,
good can do nothing once cowered in a corner

cackling with glee,
at the mess they've made,
they leave you lost and helpless, when the first light of dawn hits the sky
